Moving to York County, SC

York County Utility Guide

Who to call for power, gas, water, sewer, trash and internet when you move into a home in York County, South Carolina, including Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Tega Cay and Lake Wylie. Updated 10/14/2026.

Start here

  1. Find out if the home is inside the limits of one of York County's towns. A Fort Mill, Rock Hill or York mailing address doesn't always mean the home is inside town limits, and Lake Wylie isn't a town. Water, sewer and trash depend on this.
  2. Ask the sellers for a recent electric bill. Three electric providers serve York County, and the bill shows which one serves the home.
  3. Call to start service about two weeks before closing. Ask for service to start on your closing date.

Natural gas

Propane

Many rural homes use a propane tank. Check the tank for a company name before you call anyone. Many tanks are leased, and only the company that owns the tank can fill it.

Good to Know

Mailing address isn't town limits

Many homes with a Fort Mill, Rock Hill or Clover mailing address sit outside town limits. Confirm before you call about water or trash.

Ask for deposits up front

Water, gas and electric providers may charge a setup fee or deposit for new accounts. Ask when you call so it doesn't surprise you.

Call 811 before you dig

Planning a fence or garden? South Carolina requires a free call to 811 so buried lines can be marked first.

Smell gas?

Leave the house first, then call your gas company's emergency line from outside. If the smell is strong, call 911.
