- Find out if the home is inside a town's limits. Union County's "Find My Municipality" tool at unioncountync.gov will tell you. Water, sewer and trash depend on it.
- Ask the sellers for a recent electric bill. Four different electric companies serve Union County, and the bill shows which one serves the home.
- Call to start service about two weeks before closing. Ask for service to start on your closing date.
Power and Gas
Electric · Natural gas · PropaneElectric
Your electric company is set by the home's address, not by your choice.
Natural gas
Not every home has a gas line. If the home has no gas line, it may use propane or be all electric.
Propane
Many rural homes use a propane tank. Check the tank for a company name before you call anyone. Many tanks are leased, and only the company that owns the tank can fill it.
Water
Public water · Private wellUnion County Water serves most of the county. Monroe, Marshville and Wingate run their own water systems.

Trash and Recycling
Town pickup · Private haulers · County drop-offUnion County does not pick up trash at the curb. Most towns do, through a hauler the town hires. Outside town limits, you set up service with a private hauler.

Good to Know
Town limits decide a lot
A "Monroe" or "Waxhaw" mailing address doesn't always mean the home is inside town limits. Confirm with Union County's Find My Municipality tool before you call about water or trash.
Ask for deposits up front
Water and electric providers may charge a setup fee or deposit for new accounts. Ask when you call so it doesn't surprise you.
Call 811 before you dig
Planning a fence or garden? North Carolina law requires a free call to 811 so buried lines can be marked first.
Smell gas?
Leave the house first, then call your gas company's emergency line from outside. If the smell is strong, call 911.
